Title Language Requirement Exemption Regulations

Students are required to submit test scores to professors on the day of Freshman Orientation (August 31, 3 pm, at YIC, Humanities & Social Sciences Bldg Rm 102 for the 2012 Fall Semester) in order to apply for a waiver.

Korean Program Target Students: 
International Humanities and Social Sciences students who are admitted in 2009 and thereafter (except heritage speakers)
Curriculum: Beginning Korean I, II, Intermediate Korean I, II

Japanese/Chinese Program Target Students: 
Humanities and Social Sciences students admitted in 2009 and thereafter whose first language is Korean and Korean heritage speakers.
Curriculum: Basic Japanese I, II, Intermediate Japanese I, II 
Basic Chinese I, II, Intermediate Chinese I, II
 
 
Humanities and Social Sciences students admitted in 2009 are required to take 2 semesters of language courses.
Students admitted in 2010 majoring in CLC, ECON, IS and PSIR are required to take 4 semesters of language courses.
 
Students admitted in 2011 majoring in CLC, ECON, IS and PSIR are required to take 2 semesters of language courses.
Language requirements are not required to LSBT students.
 
 
Students can earn a waiver from foreign language requirements if they submit proficiency test results and pass the in-house interview with language instructors. Those students who have taken the standardized language proficiency test must submit the most recent score and consult the language instructor for appropriate placement.
 
Asian Studies majors must take 6 semesters of one foreign language. Only 6 credits of language courses will count toward major requirements. The remaining 12 credits will count as CC. Those students who get exempted, or only have to fulfill partial requirements, do not earn extra credits, but should take other courses in place of language courses.
