Call for Applications

Online “Kyoto Summer Program” by Kyoto University, Japan: July 29 – August 10, 2022*

The call for applications is now open for the “2022 Kyoto Summer Program,” a summer session study abroad program offered to international students from universities around the world as well as those enrolled at Kyoto University. The program normally takes place at the Kyoto University campus but, due to continuing concern over the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s program will be held online from July 29th–August 10th. A maximum of five UIC students will be selected to join the program consisting of 1) lectures in English on Japanese culture, society, and environment; 2) Japanese language classes**; and 3)virtual field trips and other activities with students from Kyoto University and other participating universities around the world. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive certificates issued by Kyoto University.*** This is a prestigious program that would merit a place on students’ CVs. UIC students of any major are eligible to apply. Students with no prior knowledge of subjects related to Japan are particularly welcome. While priority is given to Korean students, international students may also apply. The tuition fees are generously covered by Kyoto University, so that the program is free to those students selected to participate.

*A preparatory session will be held on July 28, for which attendance is required.

** There are no requirements of Japanese language proficiency. Following a placement test, students will be placed in the appropriate levels of class: Elementary I, Elementary II, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, or Advanced.

*** This program does not grant UIC credits.

N.B. Participants need to be able to attend 80% of the whole program on a real-time basis. For the full schedule, refer to the attached flyer. Participating students must comply with the rules and regulations of Kyoto University.
