Two-Week Summer Program at Kyoto University with 3 Credits,

July 29-August 10, 2019

 
The call for applications is now open for the two-week “2019 Kyoto Summer Program for East Asia and Germany Students with KU Students” (Kyoto Summer Program) at Kyoto University, Japan, from July 29 to August 10, 2019. The maximum of three outstanding UIC students will be selected to join the Kyoto Summer Program consisting of: lectures in English on topics including aesthetics in Japanese literature, human minds in zoology, and environmental technology; Japanese language classes (Beginner; Intermediate I; Intermediate II; Advanced); field trip to historic sites; and student-planned activities with Kyoto University students. Participants will benefit from the scholarly excellence at Kyoto University as well as close interactions with students from top schools in East Asia and Germany. In order to earn 3 credits, students must be enrolled in the “Senior Thesis Independent Study” (UIC 4801) course in the Fall 2019 semester and conduct related research supervised by a UIC professor in the relevant field.

 

The tuition and housing (hotel) fee will be covered by Kyoto University (please note that rooms will be shared with two to three other participants of the same sex.) The participating students are responsible for: round-trip airfare; mandatory travel insurance fee; field trip expense; and other personal expenses. No Japanese proficiency is necessary since the entire program is conducted in English. UIC students of any major are eligible to apply, but the priority is given to junior and senior students with no experience of living in Japan. Please note that participating students must comply with the laws and regulations of the Government of Japan and the rules and regulations of Kyoto University.

Applications will be reviewed by the Kyoto Summer Program Selection Committee chaired by Professor Tomoko Seto (ASD) and supervised by Professor Jaeyoun Won (Sociology, ASD Chair) and Professor Helen Lee (CC). After the initial screening, the Selection Committee will conduct interviews with finalists in the second week of June, and selected students will be notified by June 11.
