Tip: Preparing a research proposal?

A suitable proposal demonstrates that you have a clear vision of what you want to investigate, why it is an interesting topic, how you will approach the research question, and what the expected outcomes will be. You can get the advice from Dr. Sol-A Yu, if you want. Her guidance will focus on not only the development of research ideas, but also writing a neat proposal.

 

About UIC Research Project

 Underwood International College is excited to present ’the 2016 UIC Research Project’. It will be a great opportunity to improve your research ability by conducting a research in Korea with fellow students in the winter of 2017.

 Any UIC students who are interested in performing a research project in this winter are encouraged to submit proposals. Students can choose any subjects, ranging from scientific to imaginative, that can enhance and deepen their knowledge in the classroom. With help from specialists who are knowledgeable in the subject field, inside or outside of school, selected students will conduct each phase of research process: choosing a topic or research problem, review of literature (theoretical background & advanced researches), formulating hypotheses, developing the research design, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation & report.

 A monetary support of 500,000 won will be granted to each selected student. Upon completion of the research project and course, the students will each get 1 credit. Various opportunities to showcase their research experience will be given as well.

 
Eligibility

 The program is open to all UIC students. Students can enter individually or as a team. The number of students per team should be 4 or less (Students in their final semesters are not eligible).

 

Subject of Study

  • Any subject that enhances and expands classroom learning is acceptable.
  • Participants can choose to visit various locations in Korea that are relevant to the research subject.
    : Research institutions, universities, government agencies, various social organizations, and nonprofit institutions pertaining to your subject can be selected.
  • Any individuals who are knowledgeable in the subject field can be interviewed as well.
  • All the arrangements should be made by participants.

Role of Research Advisor

 Each team should have its own research advisor. Specialists knowledgeable in the subject field, inside or outside of Yonsei University, can be a research advisor. The research advisor will supervise each stage of the research. The advisor will review the proposal, guide participants through each stage, and monitor the final work.

 
Benefits

  • Selected students will get one credit under ‘UIC Research Project (P/NP Graded Course)’
  • Research funding up to KRW 500,000 per individual
  • Opportunities to showcase the research on various occasions

 Selection Procedures

 Each submission will be carefully reviewed by UIC faculty judges based on the rubrics listed below.

  •  Well-formulated goals & objectives
  • Clear explanation of proposed research procedures
  • Explanation of research design & proposed data analysis
  • Communication of relevance/ importance of the proposed research project
  • Practical application/ potential impact of the research Project

Things to Know

 Selected students must enroll in one credit session course of ‘UIC Research Project’ in the winter term but registration fee is not covered

Documents pertaining to the research must be available to UIC upon request.

 Selected students must attend orientations, showcases, and UIC events that may involve the project.

Participants cannot combine their research with other personal purposes.

Students will be guided on how to write research paper reports.
