UIC Hosts 2016 Design Factory Korea Gala Night
Where Remarkable Designs Meet Leading Global Corporations
On June 16, students from UIC’s Techno-Art Division went to Gangnam D.Camp Event Hall for 2016 Design Factory Korea (DFK) Gala Night where they presented the results of Capstone Project over the past year.
DFK Gala Night is an annual event celebrating the final results of UIC’s “Techno-Art Capstone Project” course. In the Capstone Project, UIC senior students majoring in Techno-Art Division’s Culture & Design Management (CDM), Information and Interaction Design (IID) or Creative Technology Management (CTM) conceive, develop and generate creative services and products. Teams are always interdisciplinary and often international. Students work together with either company’s specified challenge or students’ own interests to create a product that satisfies the values of innovative design, manufacturability and marketability.
This is the second Gala event for DFK, which celebrated its first anniversary last April. DFK is a part of the Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) - an innovative and interdisciplinary program that was first established by Aalto University in Finland.
In Gala Hall, 35 students in groups of three to five presented their creative working prototypes to the public. Also, numerous domestic and foreign companies were present: Allianz, Amore Pacific, Cisco, Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Pepsi, Innovation Centre Denmark, WeDesign, Apo Idea and Herald Korea. Company representatives were invited to reflect and give corporate advice and feedback on students’ performances. Around 90 guests, including DFK faculty, students and 20 company officials, attended.
After their presentation, the panel of judges, DFK faculty, company representatives, a student representative from 2015 Gala winner team, evaluated each team’s services/products according to the innovativeness of design, range of influence and potentiality of value creation. The audience also voted for the most preferred team, which reflects public’s preference and marketability of students’ products.
As a result, team “Lapse” consisting of Seo Hee Lee (CDM ‘12), Joo Kyung Shin (CDM ‘12) and Eun Seong Lee (CTM ‘12), was awarded the Judges’ Choice, and team “Brelli Box” consisting Myeong Ji Yoon (CDM ‘13), Hyelin Ku (CDM ‘13), Susanna Kang (CDM ‘12) and Christine McGahhey (IID ‘13) won the Audience's’ Choice Award. “Lapse” is an indicator for the expiry of cosmetics. The time the product expires after opening is different from the expiration date printed on the container. “Brelli Box” is a product that can dry an umbrella by twisting it inside an absorbable and eco-friendly fabric. All students also received a completion certificate upon successfully finishing the Capstone course.
Impressed by Yonsei students’ talent and potential, corporate officials who participated in the Gala Night said, “We saw the passion and challenging spirit of the students, who pulled through from ideas and conceptualization to actual prototyping over the course of a year.”
In addition, based on this industry-academy collaboration, team “Walker Holic” consisting of Jisun Kim (IID ‘13), Yurae Kim (IID ‘13), Ji Yeon Ku (CDM ‘13) and Yeon Kyung Lee (CTM ‘13), completed the project with Allianz Korea, the global insurance service group. They participated in a team project to improve the services and marketing strategy of Allianz Korea’s online insurance product, “AllRight”, and developed a new health care service application called “Walker Hollic”. On July 7th, they successfully presented their creative ideas on service provision and marketing plans at Allianz Korea’s headquarters.
DFK, celebrating its second anniversary this year, is becoming a center for future-oriented education and industry-academy collaboration. DFK will continue to cooperate with DFK global network partners, focusing on providing students with opportunities to work with the students and companies from around the world.
