ALUMNI AND UIC COMMUNITY

The Heart of UIC, the Students

Future Leaders

■ UIC Student Council, "United"

It is with great honor that we, as the 11th Student Council, “United”, extend our greetings to you through the first UIC Newsletter. We have embarked on an extraordinary journey with UIC to unlock the potential we have as leaders of our society.

As for the student council, we welcome you all back the second semester of 2016. In this short column, we would like to introduce to you a couple of the issues that we have been dealing with in regards to your welfare and experience as a UIC student.

Alongside the development of a UIC-exclusive application, UNICON, which aims to integrate and advance the academic community of UIC, the student council and the UIC Congress have been working together to update the UIC Student Constitution to fit the changes that have occurred in the past couple of years.

We have made great efforts for extensive student rights in the General Extended Student Committee of Yonsei University, aiming for a full ratification of all UIC Majors within the General Student Electoral body as well. With the 16.5 Freshmen coming into college, we are excited to welcome our new members to our family, and help grow the diverse and international student body that UIC represents.

As the festival period draws closer along with the Yon-ko Games, we are once again ready to display our UIC spirit, and be united as a whole. We plan to finish off our term strong, with a UIC Banquet coming up right after midterms. We are working to provide a fulfilling experience here at UIC, and wish to build unity among the students.

Thank you, and stay tuned!

Minji Kim (IS ‘13)
Intern at Alibaba, China, and Boston Consulting Group, Korea

Ni hao! I am Minji Kim, Class of 13, International Studies major. To briefly tell you how I spent the last several months, I would like to first say that keywords are 'China' and 'Tech.' I worked as an operational specialist in Alibaba Group Headquarters in Hangzhou, China for three months beginning from March.
As I was an intern, I was free to explore a diversity of tasks. One of them was to discover some of the high-quality Korean beauty brands that have not yet entered the Chinese market and establish partnerships between the brand and Tmall. My second main task was to supervise supplier companies during the auditing process to make sure all required documents and certificates are submitted on time and handed in to the Legal Department of Alibaba to get approval.

After I came back to Korea in July, I began another internship as a research assistant at Boston Consulting Group Seoul office, specifically responsible for research on China tech industry. I was planning to go back to school as the Fall classes began. However, the more data I accumulated from research regarding Chinese tech ecosystem, the more I wanted to go back to China once again to witness the vigorous startup ecosystem for myself. So, I searched for opportunities in Shanghai and found one in Technode, the top tech-media in China to work as a reporter.

Jin-ah Bae (IS ‘13)
Internship, Hong Kong, Mergermarket Group

I spent this summer in Hong Kong for my internship and it was a truly valuable experience. I worked for Mergermarket Group which provides advisory and corporate communities with actionable financial analysis and data. I was in charge of researching East Asia's private equity and venture capital market. I spent most of my time looking up corporates' financial data or investment deals and analyzing them. I also met a lot of amazing people with diverse backgrounds. After work, I usually enjoyed happy-hour drinks in bars with my friends and colleagues. Every weekend, I traveled around Hong Kong, including local islands and regions that are not popular for tourists. I will never forget Hong Kong's fantastic night view.

Claire Hayn Lee (IS ‘12)
Asian Business International Conference, Case Study Competition, Journal

This summer, I took the opportunity to participate in a case study competition with two UIC upperclassmen. We were able to write a thesis paper that will soon be published in a journal. We participated in an international business case competition from the Academy of Asian Business. My group had selected the Korean Company, the Orion group, and conducted a market analysis to advance growth and revenue. Our research and data has been selected to be published in the Journal “How Asian Brands Soar” as one of the top 10 papers (http://www.aabworld.org/activities/International_competition.php).

Eric Paik (Econ ‘12)
Startup, Founder of BARC (Body Architect), Healthcare Industry

BARC (Body Architect) is a healthcare service company that provides personal fitness training to individuals at their own place. Thoroughly selected trainers visit customers’ homes with a full set of workout kit and provide training for a given amount of time. Fortunately, it is continuously stabilizing its position in the market, expanding at a steady pace. For the past couple months, my team has been mainly focusing on recruiting new trainers, marketing in newly expanded areas of Bun-dang and Song-pa, and calibrating customer operational system. I can’t promise how far this business would expand and claim market share but, I can say for sure that regardless of failure or success, the experience will be a precious stepping stone for me.

Yohan Jeong (CTM ‘14)
Co-Founder, Director, Producer of Wonderwood Productions

WW! Hello guys! My name is Yohan Jeong, CTM major class of 2015. About 9 months ago, I co-founded a creative content production company called Wonderwood with Hyungjun Cho and Younghyun Kim. This production company represents Techno-Art Division in UIC since each of us is in different majors within TAD.
From November 2015 to June 2016, we participated in several different types of public contests and produced a commercial advertisement, public campaign, major promo and three music videos. We wanted to gain experience in many different kinds of creative content. We recruited new members at the beginning of summer and six more from different fields such as music, art and philosophy.
