Acclaimed Writer Chang-rae Lee Visits UIC

Inspiring Special Lecture on Creative Writing

Distinguished Shinhan Professor Chang-rae Lee taught a two-week creative writing course for UIC students starting from May 9. In addition to being an award-winning author, he is a professor of creative writing at Princeton University. This was Professor Lee’s fifth visit to UIC since 2008.

In this year’s course, Professor Lee shared his philosophy of writing with students and gave them practical advice on how to improve their own writing. Students were required to write a short story during his visit, and he provided individual feedback on each work.

UIC student Chae-rin Kim said of this year’s course, “I was attracted to Professor Lee’s passion for writing and his philosophy. We had an enjoyable time discussing our own writing.”

On May 11, Professor Lee also gave a special lecture at UIC, which was entitled “My Year Abroad.” During the talk, he read excerpts from his upcoming book and answered a number of questions from the audience.

Professor Lee first gained critical acclaim for his novel Native Speaker in 1995. He went on to receive several prestigious literary awards, including the Hemingway Foundation/Pen Award, the Barnes and Noble’s New Writer Award, the American Book Award, and the Oregon Book Award.
