2016 Global Career Tour in New York
A Taste of the Business World Help Students Plan their Future
The 13th Global Career Tour (GCT) took place in New York from July 10th to July 17th 2016. GCT is a unique program designed to provide students with on-site learning opportunities in a diverse range of fields. Students are given the opportunity to meet corporate recruiters, network with professionals, receive advice and experience the work environment of multinational corporations.
This year’s GCT was located in New York, the hub of global finance, and the most populous city in the United States. It provided two different tracks: Track 1 was operated by Global Asset Management Program at Graduate School of Economics. Many students with previous background and knowledge in Finance, Asset Management, and Investment Banking chose Track 1. Track 2 included visiting various companies from diverse industries. This track was recommended to those who are exploring career options.
Many students in UIC wish to take advantage of the opportunity, especially as they approach their junior and senior years. Jun Woo Choi (CTM ‘12) commented how he came to participate in the tour: “Looking at past GCT brochures and hearing from seniors and colleagues who had gone in previous years, I knew this would be a great chance for me to explore, learn, network, and plan for the future.” The tour provides assistance for the students who are still in the midst of finding their passion and interest.
The scope of the tour provides benefits for everyone, whether it be from meeting successful professionals from various industries to understanding products and services of each company, listening to professionals’ career advice or networking with people from different fields. The tour allows students to gain knowledge and hear about hands-on experiences from the specialists in the area—information that is hard to come by otherwise. For many, GCT was a source of self-reflection, growth, and inspiration. GCT is about giving oneself the chance to think and mature with a change in perspective. One student mentioned, “This trip personally allowed me to look at the world differently and it was impressive to see people’s work ethic. Despite the rigorous daily routine, people we met in New York still found a way to enjoy and appreciate life, which I found inspiring.”
GCT is indeed an eye-opening experience that provides hard-to-access opportunities for the university students. It enables students to explore a wide range of careers as well as delve in depth in a specific field. GCT is welcomes all students at Underwood International College who are interested.
