International Design Factory Week 2016: Sharing the Passion of Learning in Geneva

On the last month of 2016, members of Design Factory Korea, an educational platform located in Yonsei University’s International Campus, went to Geneva to participate International Design Factory Week - the biggest event of the year for Design Factory Global Network. Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) is a network of worldwide universities that shares a passion for creating an innovative learning environment. So far, 14 institutes across the world have joined DFGN and the number of institutes joining the network is increasing each year. Through the network, members of DFGN exchange ideas about experimental education system on different cultural background and share various project ideas for future collaboration.

International Design Factory Week (IDFW) is an annual workshop organized to increase the interaction between the members of DFGN, mainly to share knowledge about new educational trends. Each year, IDFW is hosted by one of the member country of the network. Last year, IDFW 2016 was hosted by CERN Ideasquare, an European organization for nuclear research, in Geneva, Switzerland, from 12th to 16th of December. Professor Yong Soo Cho (Director), Professor Sang Won Lee, Professor Youn Ah Kang, and DFK coach, Ms. Sooa Hwang participated in IDFW 2016 as members of Design Factory Korea. This year, 43 participants from 14 different countries gathered in CERN Ideasqure.

IDFW 2016 had three main events: DFGN workshop, unofficial teamwork activities, and CERN visits. During the DFGN Workshop, all members of Design Factories participated in four different tracks: Operation and Management, Funding, Research, and Pedagogy. People dived into the workshop to learn and share the insights with each other. At the end of the week, DFGN, as a whole group, participated in the workshop with other NGOs in Geneva to solve various global issues.

According to Ms. Sooa Hwang, throughout the workshops, members of DFK adopted different tools that could enhance the quality of teamwork, especially when working with people from diverse cultures. In a spring semester of 2017, Design Factory Korea is planning to apply those newly learned tools to student projects in Yonsei International Campus. She said, “We believe small steps can make a big change. Our new tools will make the education system in UIC more innovative.”

In this year, it has been officially decided that IDFW 2017 will be hosted by Design Factory Korea. IDFW 2017 will take place in Yonsei International Campus from 30th of October to 3rd of November 2017. This year, 18 teams from DFGN network will visit the campus. Ms. Sooa Hwang said that Design Factory Korea is happy to share two year-and-half experience of joining Design Factory workshops with other members from all around the world.

DFK Monthly Breakfast: Starting the Day with Fresh and Healthy Breakfast at DFK

During the last fall semester, Design Factory Korea opened a monthly breakfast for Underwood International College students on 8th of September, 13th of October, and 15th of November. Students were provided with healthy and fresh food with a space to meet new friends. Each month had different menus: pancakes, French crepes, and kaya toast. Menus were selected to satisfy diverse tastes from all international students. Students gathered in Design Factory Korea and grabbed a hot meal before heading to their morning classes. Some of the students had a chance to meet and talk to their professors in the breakfast event. Such interaction was an opportunity to build an active relationship not only between the students, but also between the professors and students.

The monthly breakfast event became a remarkable starting point of Design Factory Korea for being an important place of communication in Yonsei International Campus (YIC). Considering that many students living in YIC have a limited chance of meeting new friends, Design Factory Korea promised to continuously create fun events that could increase interactions between students, expecting students to take the best out of their college life.
