2017 UIC Orientation for Freshmen

Welcome to UIC, Everyone!

On the spring semester of this year, 463 students were welcomed to be part of UIC. On the morning of February 14, Underwood International College hosted a two day long Pre-Freshmen Orientation for the upcoming class of 2017. Upperclassmen in the UIC Student Council, Solidity, and the UIC Congress actively participated in the event, planning various activities for the new students. For students who graduated overseas high schools, UIC offered them the Orientation workshop on 28 of February, considering that the students inevitably came to Korea few days before the semester started. This year, about 40 overseas student from 11 countries joined UIC. Similar to the orientation for domestic students, the orientation for overseas students taught students about a college life in Korea, information about Common Curriculum, and several UIC programs.

The orientation was held in 100th Anniversary Memorial Hall around 8:30 AM. After a brief introduction of the council members and an ice-breaking session amongst classmates, the General Student Club Union held a session introducing different club activities in UIC. The orientation reached its climax when it started Akaraka Orientation, a session in which students can learn cheering songs and dances of Yonsei University. The event left freshmen students exhausted but excited for the upcoming days for school events when they could perform what they had learned.

On the second day of Orientation, students joined an information session hosted by the General Female Student Council and learned the importance of gender equality. Later, they also participated UIC Orientation and point games. In the UIC Orientations, professors stepped up to the stage and explained the curriculum of UIC. The point games gave the freshmen a better understanding of the school traditions. According to a freshman, the orientation really “set UIC apart from other colleges.”

On the 23rd, the UIC freshmen left for Ganghwado for the annual Pre-Frosh Workshop. The event was expected to make a strong bond between students. Major Information Session was designed to inform the students about majors in UIC so that they could choose which major they would want to declare later. On the next day, the Akaraka team, a cheering team of Yonsei University, hosted a cheering orientation. Participating in the cheering session and drinking together afterwards, the freshmen were drawn closer to each other than ever.
