Schwarzman Scholars Networking Event

Meeting the Future Leaders of the World

 by Youngsun Om (STP '17)

In February 2019, 25 Schwarzman Scholars visited Yonsei University as a part of Korea Deep Dive and had a networking session with Underwood International College students at Eugene Lounge, Daewoo Annex Hall. Schwarzman Scholars Program is a prestigious one-year Master’s degree and a highly selective Rhode-like scholarship at Tsinghua University in Beijing. With the inaugural class enrolled in 2016, the program encourages students to pursue a Master’s in Global Affairs with concentrations in one of the following disciplines: international studies, economics and business, and public policy.

Schwarzman Scholars Program consists of ongoing series of high-profile lectures by distinguished leaders in politics, business, the arts and civil society. Through these lectures, the Scholars get to connect with some of the world's brightest minds and luminaries to challenge their thinking and broaden their perspectives. Distinguished guest lecturers share insights on developments in their fields and reflect on their own experience of leadership. Opportunities like mentoring sessions and internships are given as well.

Schwarzman Scholars’ visit to Korea was a part of Deep Dive Program which is an intensively planned field trip to visit other Chinese cities or countries nearby China to experience and understand the political, economic, socio-cultural setting. It aims to connect the Scholars with local companies, organizations, and individuals and eventually creating an environment where collaborative projects can be initiated. While staying in Korea, the Scholars got to meet Ban Ki-Moon, the former secretariat general of the UN and the current honorary professor at Yonsei, and visited companies like Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, Hanhwa Group, and YG Entertainment.

The networking event was co-organized by an UIC alumni, Yujin Lee (Science Technology and Policy, 14) who is currently a Schwarzman Scholars, and Social Innovation Creators’ Academia (SICA) which is a student-led academic organization that pursues the value of social innovation by solving social issues through creative projects. The event was also funded by the Institute for Higher Education Innovation (IHEI).
