Design Thinking Boot Camp at Aalto Design Factory

Design Factory Global Network Delegates to Finland

The Design Factory Global Network is a community of universities and research centers disseminated among 21 countries aiming to set the way toward a new educational paradigm based on an inter-disciplinary approach to engineering, design and business.

During the program at the Aalto Design Factory, the students selected to represent Design Factory Korea participated in a weeklong intensive workshop, which provided the hands-on experience of the Design Factory concept and its educational philosophy.

The challenge given to the students was creating ideas for “products for pets.” After the three-day design crash course, going through each stage of the design thinking methodology, the student delegates pitched their design solutions: a dog computer that could help owner take care of their dog’s health, an entertaining robot-aided dog mat that operates by scent, an automatic dog scent recognition training device, and a remote controllable dog toy.

The students also engaged in cultural activities and industry visits during the trip. The visits to Maria01, Startup Sauna, and Urban Mill provided our students with the understanding of the start-up ecosystem and culture that are unique to Finland. It was an opportunity for our students to learn how industries, the government organizations and universities cooperate to create new opportunities and the context behind the co-working culture. The cultural experience program included the visits to ‘Nuuksio National Park’, ‘Finnish Kitchen Experience’, ‘EMMA’, ‘OODI’as well as ‘Fortress of Suomenlinna.’ This program allowed the students to experience many cultural and historical assets of Finalnd reflected in their design and nature.
