Rat Relay
The DFGN Flagship
From November 20 to 23, 2018, 18 UIC students participated in Rat Relay, a global design hackathon organized in the Design Factory Global Network. The project aims to tackle five real-life challenges suggested by the local partners of each participating design factories within 36 hours.
Fourteen design factories participated in this fourth rendition of Rat Relay, and DFK joined the project for the first time with Root Impact as our local partner. The challenge DFK suggested via Root Impact was the “change-maker’s eco-life.” The specific goal of this challenge was to find an eco-conscious solution that encourages single residents to incorporate actions on a daily basis and take on consumption patterns that minimizes environmental impact by producing less waste and recycling in an efficient productive manner in the co-living house. DFK sent out this challenge to the world after Tuesday afternoon it returned to DFK in Friday morning.
The participating students worked in real-time with teams in other countries, applying design methods, building on others’ work, and testing their ideas. Their challenge was to make the most out of the six-hour slot before handing the project over to another team in another Design Factory around the globe.
Each six-hour slot started with an introduction to the design thinking process and getting to know the challenge. The students were tasked to hack the challenge with a special focus on one of the design thinking phases.
