NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

Nexus Maximus V

Design Factory Global Innovation Tour to Philadelphia

From September 19 to 26, the DFK student delegations led by Professor Semee Yoon, the Associate Director of Design Factory Korea (DFK), participated in the 5th iteration of Nexus Maximus, a parent project by Nexus Design Factory, Thomas Jefferson University with the support of Yonsei Center for Social Innovation.

The participating students were assigned specific zipcodes in Philadelphia to tackle local challenges under the theme of "improving lives through healthy communities." The students went through a 4-day intense workshop starting from building a team and isolating opportunities, refining a concept, detailing and delivering a new idea proposal and to delivering their ideas. Our students identified local challenges and delivered solutions in teams of multidisciplinary and international students from 9 different universities (Duoc UC, Pace, Ulster St. John’s, Aalto, Cheyney, Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Thomas Jefferson and Yonsei).

Our student delegation came up with creative venture solutions, which include ‘Spill the Beans,’ a mobile application which enhances the accessibility to healthy food, a government system to tackle the drug related mental health issues among the low income community, and “Signs of Trust” which offers a QR code linked to make donations for the homeless.

Two student teams with our delegation were awarded at the final showcase. Gahyun Kim (IID 13) and Nahye Kim (IID 15) came up with an NGO called Wellness Begins Here (WBH) which suggests healthy lifestyle, a sustainable cycle that engages the local community (individuals and organizations). And they were awarded two awards - Aalto Venters Program Award and Product Set Paratum (Most Production Ready). Nahye Kim commented as follows. “I believe it was in recognition of our effort to include all members from the community to the solution and to suggest the most practical solution. And I believe service/UX design courses in Interaction and Information Design major were the core resources for our project. Aalto University is the parent institute for all Design Factories, so we found the award much meaningful.” Taegun Park (CTM 13) suggested “Fresh Express”, which is a supplemental nutrition assistant program. His team won the top prize, Most Innovative Award. They also received the Voice of the People Award.
