The UIC Writing Center

by Professor Seunghei Clara Hong, Chair of UIC Writing Center

The UIC Writing Center provides one-on-one individual support with all forms and aspects of writing. Whether a literary analysis paper for World Literature or a research paper for History of Sciences or an internship application essay, students can seek help from our excellent tutors, who are upperclassmen from various majors within UIC and carefully selected and critically trained to help our students become more skillful writers.

Writing Center tutor Phuong Nguyen (ASD 17) recalled her first year at UIC: “I had never written papers in English before and would just cry at my desk. If there had been a Writing Center then, I would have come every day!” She added, “If not for the help I received from my professors and friends, I wouldn’t be here today. So, I’m happy to be in a position to help now. I know firsthand the difficulties that our students face—and how to improve upon them.”

CLC junior Sung Hee Lim shared that the Writing Center continues to be a source of comfort: “It’s so reassuring to meet with a kind and welcoming s?nbae who can help me develop my weaknesses and hone my strengths. I really like how the tutors, rather than providing answers, lead me through the organic process of writing.” She added: “For me, the Writing Center is a place to build relations—one with the tutors and one with my own writing.”

To better support UIC’s move to online classes and ensure the safety of our students amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Writing Center is offering online tutoring sessions via Zoom. Students can now seek writing help from the comforts of their home by reserving sessions (up to two sessions a week, two weeks in advance) and linking to their appointed sessions at the Writing Center website (uic.yonsei.ac.kr/writingcenter).

Tutor Junseo Kim (CLC 15) touted the benefits of online tutoring: “Since the Writing Center is in Songdo, the majority of our students used to be Songdo-based, but we’re seeing more students from Sinchon-based classes now.” Professor Seunghei C. Hong, Director of the UIC Writing Center, added, “We hope that our online tutoring sessions allow students to feel more connected to the wider UIC community in these challenging times.”

Professor Hong encouraged students to visit the Writing Center “at any stage of the writing process.” Tutor Sangryung Bae (PSIR 18) chimed in: “With less writing, we can help figure out ideas and how to tackle an assignment; with complete drafts, we can help with the flow of the overall argument and the structure of the paper.” Emphasizing the writing process, she encouraged students to “feel free to come to sessions with as little or as much as they have.”
