NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

The UIC Math & Science Resource (MSR) Center

by Professor Sangyup Lee, Director of ISED

The UIC Math & Science Resource (MSR) Center, organized by the Integrated Science and Engineering Division, has offered undergraduate students support for classwork since 2019. Students who need a stronger background in mathematics and science can get advice from the student volunteers to build and develop important skills for related courses. The skilled and passionate student tutors assist their peers in understanding various mathematical and scientific principles through discussion and problem solving.

The tutoring sessions are operated face-to-face in principle and are available on weekdays during the academic semesters at Veritas B Hall, Room 322 (International Campus). However, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are currently taking place online, where students can meet with their tutor students via Zoom. The online format allows us to assist the students no matter where they are. This Fall 2020 semester, the MSR center offers tutoring in the following subjects: General Chemistry/Biology/Physics and Laboratory II, Calculus and Vector Analysis II, Organic Chemistry II, Biochemistry, Fundamentals of Quantum Physics, Nanocharacterization, Computer Programming, and Introduction to Statistics.

If a student needs help in taking one of these classes, they can visit MSR Center online at uicmsr.com or email us at uicmsrcenter@gmail.com. Students must book their online tutoring session in advance, and each student can reserve up to three hours per week. If all sessions are booked, students can sign up for the waitlist; they will be notified individually on a first-come-first-served basis if a cancellation occurs. Therefore, if a student cannot attend their tutoring session, he or she must cancel at least one day prior to their reserved time.

Students may initially be overwhelmed by complex formulas and convoluted principles, but these mathematical and scientific concepts will become the fruits of logical thinking over their years at UIC. The MSR Center will assist students so that they are able to cultivate and share these fruits of academic progress themselves in a manageable way.
