1. Background:
Contrary to popular belief, many sub-Saharan African countries have experienced economic growth in recent decades. With the focus on primary education as expressed in the Millennium Development Goals of the Millennium declaration, primary school enrollment rates in sub-Saharan African countries have steadily increased, increasing from 59% in 1999 to 79% in 2012. Under the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, one of the major targets under the Goal 4 Quality Education is to ensure that all girls and boys complete free primary and secondary schooling by 2030 and to provide affordable vocational training, to eliminate gender and wealth disparities, and achieve universal access to a quality higher education.
Located on the east coast of Africa, Tanzania is a country suitable to carry out a field visit to better understand diverse factors involved in the education for sustainable development. Although there are more than 100 ethnic groups and diverse religious groups, the political sphere of Tanzania has been stable; the current government has been running a serious campaign against corruption. In the recent years, the economic growth rate of Tanzania has been around 7% and the government is keen on industrial development. Among African countries, Tanzania also receives the greatest amount ODA from KOICA as of 2018. Thus, enhancing human capital of the population, of which 75% participate in the agricultural sector, is one of the primary concerns of the Tanzanian government to reduce poverty.
To understand the complexities at hand to improve education quality in developing countries, we will partner up with E3empower, a local NGO in Tanzania. This trip aims to improve our understanding of the issues at hand through on-site activities, such as visiting primary, secondary & tertiary schools, observing the application of kitkit school in the field --- a digital early learning solution developed by Enuma --, and visiting coffee farmers to understand their (mis)conceptions about returns to education.
2. Field Site: E3mpower office, Arusha, Tanzania
3. Partner Organization: Enuma & E3Empower (Silicon Valley-founded NGO for appropriate technology in developing countries)
4. Scheduled dates: Visit preparation from May to June, visit during July 30 – August 7, 2018
5. Anticipated Research activities: Analysis of the local, regional, and international efforts to improve education quality in sub-Saharan African countries. We will meet students and parents in the local sites to analyze the root cause of the low quality education and brainstorm innovative solutions to improve education quality.
6. Skills required: The applicant should have background in the nexus among development, environment, technology and/or education and ability to work in the field. Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Experience in multicultural setting and/or working with community organizations is a plus.
