UIC Social Innovation Global Research Competition 2018 Winter

There are many challenges facing us today. The aging population is a pressing domestic issue that requires our immediate attention. Climate change affects our daily lives on a global scale. These challenges require cooperative efforts from many parties and innovative thinkers to come up with creative and viable solutions. UIC Social Innovation Global Research Competition is an opportunity for students to illuminate and propose creative solutions to one social issue that threatens the quality of human life today.
With the generous financial support from University for Creative Korea Project, UIC Social Innovation Global Research Competition will allow students in Techno-Art Division and Integrated Social Sciences Division to participate in an exciting opportunity to conduct a self-directed global research project in any location in the world.
A monetary award up to 2,000,000 won will be granted to each selected student. Upon completion of the research, students will get one winter session credit and have opportunities to present their research experience to a variety of audiences.
Theme: Social impact through innovation
Your research must demonstrate how social impact can be made on one particular social issue of your choice. You are required critically examine and analyze multiple dimensions of the problem and provide feasible and innovative solutions.
Eligibility
The program is open to students in Techno-Art Division and Integrated Social Sciences Division. You can enter individually or as a team. The number of students per team should be 4 or less. Students who are in their final semesters are not eligible to apply.
Places to Visit
Participants can choose to visit various locations in Korea or foreign countries that are relevant to the research subject. Research institutions, universities, colleges, government agencies, various social organizations, and nonprofit institutions pertaining to your subject can be selected. Any individuals who are knowledgeable in the subject field can be interviewed as well. All the arrangements should be made by participants.
Overseas Research Period
Your stay overseas for field research should not exceed 2 weeks. Field research work must be completed by January 18th, 2019.
What to Submit
Please submit the documents listed below to ycsi_ck@yonsei.ac.kr via e-mail.
- Entry form signed by a research advisor(attached to this announcement)
- A proposal of approximately 300 words. It should contain a title, your names, and student ID numbers. If you are entering as a team, all members should be listed.
- A detailed itinerary of the research trip
- A brief outline of the project budget
Role of Research Advisor
Each team should have its own research advisor. Any Yonsei faculty member can be a research advisor. The research advisor will supervise each stage of the research. The advisor will review the proposal, guide participants through each stage, and monitor the final work. P/NP grading recommendation will also be made by the research advisor.
* The research advisor is not required to accompany students for field research.
Awards
- Selected students will get one UIC credit(P/NP graded elective winter course)
- Research funding up to W2,000,000* per individual.
- Opportunities to showcase the research on various occasions
* The amount can vary depending on fieldwork location and expenses that may occur during fieldwork.
Selection Procedure
Each submission will be carefully reviewed by the Social Impact Initiative for Global Creative Talent based on the judging criteria listed below. The winning team will be notified within 10 days of the entry deadline.
- Is the subject related to the theme, social impact through innovation?
- Is the research important to the relevant field of research?
- Is the need for research abroad fully exploited?
- Are the selected destinations and individuals to be interviewed appropriate for the subject?
- Is the itinerary concrete, feasible, and meticulous?
Things to Know
- Depending on the quality of the proposals, one or more teams may be selected.
- Within a month of the final date of the winter session, the final paper must be handed in.
- Photos and documents pertaining to the research must be available to UIC upon request.
- Selected students must attend orientations, showcases, and UIC events that may involve the competition.
- Participants cannot combine their research abroad with other personal purposes.
- Selected students must enroll in the designated winter session course(registration fee is not covered)
Important dates
Contestants must submit their entries by November 16st, 2018 to Yonsei Center for Social Innovation ycsi_ck@yonsei.ac.kr
Field research and the first draft of the research paper must be completed by January 18th, 2019
