Yonsei University Selected as a Finalist for MSS “2020 Makerspace Development Program”

Adapted translation of original post by Office of Public Relations (May 2020)

On May 6, 2020, Yonsei University was selected as a finalist for the “2020 Makerspace Development Program” supervised by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS). This program was launched in 2018 in order to promote the nationwide expansion of makerspaces1, fostering their continued growth as sites of innovation for manufacturing startups.

Yonsei was chosen as a “professional lab,” meaning it will support makers with the advanced stages of manufacturing (e.g. prototyping, mass production) as well as assisting in the connection and collaboration between existing startup facilities and “general labs” within the region. With this designation, Yonsei will operate the makerspace with funds and services from the government for a maximum of five years (3+2). In the first year, Yonsei is eligible for up to 1.5 billion KRW in funding.

This is especially exciting news for Underwood International College, which houses the experimental learning platform Design Factory Korea (DFK). Established in 2015 at the Songdo campus, DFK has been managed by Underwood faculty and staff to become the epicenter for numerous innovative design projects. Unsurprisingly, the proposal for the Yonsei Makerspace actually has its roots in the contents and infrastructure of DFK. The Makerspace will continue to utilize DFK’s facilities and the expertise of its personnel (as well as the resources of the Institute of Convergence Technology) in order to support the general labs as well as advanced manufacturing startups and prospective entrepreneurs.

Design Factory Korea (DFK) allows students to collaborate on creative projects using cutting-edge technology.

The Yonsei Makerspace aims to be a sustainable lab that produces a version of manufacturing innovation best suited for everyday life. Yonsei will meet the makers where they are using the “Innovative Life 7” strategy, which compartmentalizes the manufacturing process into the following categories: systematization, specialization, commercialization, digitization, automation, and diversification.

In addition, to contribute to the digitization and economic growth of the regional community, Yonsei seeks to create success cases of various convergence technologies and to serve as the focal point for investment attraction and new industry creation.

As head supervisor of the Makerspace project, the vice president of Yonsei International Campus (Professor Yeon Seob Ha) expressed his aspirations “to ensure that Yonsei’s professional lab will demonstrate self-directed innovation by becoming the forefront of maker activities.”
