UIC Hosts 17th Global Career Tour Online

In the first week of July, UIC hosted the 17th UIC Global Career Tour.

This highly popular annual program is unique to UIC. In other  years, it has provided participating students with on-site opportunities to visit multinational corporations and to meet  with corporate recruiters and professionals from a diverse range of industries.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic compromised the  possibilities of an overseas trip, UIC ensured the same career   planning opportunities for its students by hosting the Career Tour as an online event. In some ways, this change was a blessing in disguise, as it allowed UIC to host speakers from a   variety of different countries. The students responded with enthusiasm as well, marking the highest number of applicants since the program’s start in 2008.

The six companies of this year’s tour were selected based on student interest: Amazon, Standard and Poor’s (Hong Kong), British American Tobacco (Indonesia), Google (Korea), Proctor and Gamble (Korea), and SoftBank (Japan). Each Zoom session was hosted by an industry expert, most of whom were UIC alumni. They first presented the philosophy of their respective companies and later answered student questions about hiring procedures and career advice.

Speakers shared across the board that companies want to see in their candidates the willingness to take risks, ability to think critically and communicate efficiently, and above all, an inclination for resilience. These dispositions make for an effective problem solver, which is what every successful corporation is looking for when they bring on a new team member. In order to best meet these demands, the speakers recommended that students seek out meaningful internship and extracurricular experiences during their undergraduate years. Many speakers also emphasized the importance of telling a coherent “story” through their resume and cover letter, tailoring each aspect of their application to the specific company and position.re UIC alumni. They first presented the philosophy of their respective companies and later answered student questions about hiring procedures and career advice.
