Six Selected Yonsei University Students Successfully Participate in IIDC 2020

by Chiwon Lee (IID ‘17)

From August 18 to August 28, six selected students from Underwood International College’s Techno-Art Division (Chiwon Lee, Keunchan Bae, Seungyeon Cho, Jiyoung Lee, Seohyun Chung, Ilhwa Ryu) successfully participated in the International Integrated Design Camp (IIDC) 2020. This event is run by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP), and it was held online this year with the topic of developing a design solution for the pandemic era.

IIDC 2020 consisted of 11 teams, totalling 63 students from 38 universities in 16 countries, as well as 13 experts (tutors) from 12 different companies and institutions. Company associations of the tutors included Google (USA), BMW Designworks (Germany), and forpeople (UK).

Chiwon Lee, an IID Senior, developed "More Than a Box," a modular multimedia augmented reality room for mental well-being, and she had the help of her teammates as well as tutor Emmanuel Wolfs, the co-founder of "Wolfs & Jung" based in Beijing and Seoul.

Chiwon said that her overall experience was rewarding because she was able to collaborate with passionate students and tutors from around the world. She learned that it is possible to quickly ideate a creative solution with participants from around the world, with the help of enthusiastic organizers and digital tools. She quoted that she is particularly thankful to Professor Soojin Jun for providing this opportunity.

Keunchan Bae, an IID/CTM Junior, developed “UNWND,” a sustainable and smart protection kit for travelers during and after the pandemic. Keunchan worked with his teammates and tutor Yoo Kyoung Noh, the UX Design Lead at Google, and received helpful mentoring from Soosin Choi, the Chair of IIDC 2020.

Keunchan stated IIDC was challenging for all of his teammates because they had “to design a product and service that is nearly ready to be on the market within less than 10 days.” Nonetheless, he thought it was “a great opportunity” as he was able to "collaborate with designers in various fields and create design works intensively in a short amount of time.” His team received the runner-up prize.

Sungyeon Cho, a CTM Senior, who also received the runner-up prize, agreed with Keunchan by stating that although “it was a very intense two weeks, [she] was able to explore the whole design process thoroughly.”

Seohyeon Chung, a CDM Sophomore, highlighted that, by participating in IIDC 2020, she was able to learn “a lot about different design areas and how design thinking functions in various industries via team members and the tutor from diverse educational backgrounds and interests.”
