We offer one-on-one tutoring support for all undergraduate UIC students.
Feel free to drop by during our open hours or make an appointment.
Our main forms of writing support are Technical and Substantive. Technical deals with grammatical and word choice errors, while substantive deals with argumentation, use of textual evidence, and overall structure. In other words, technical focuses on the nuts and bolts of your essay—the details and pieces that hold it together, such as whether a sentence is grammatically correct and if the meaning is clear and coherent. Substantive looks at the big picture—how all the pieces fit together and what story they tell, such as whether your argument makes sense, your evidence effectively supports the thesis, or your organization makes logical sense to a reader.
· Any ideas or questions
· Any writing or scraps of notes
· An assignment or writing prompt
· Partial or complete draft
· Your lovely self
Our tutors are well-trained upperclassmen and fellow UIC students, so feel free to speak with us casually! As fellow students, tutors have first-hand experience with the demands—and the stress—of UIC’s writing assignments. We are here to help and, more often than not, just coming in and discussing your writing assignment and ideas can do wonders for organizing your thoughts and figuring out how to get things done.
· Teach course texts or content
· "Fix" students’ writings, revise/rewrite, or copy-edit
· Give "answers," arguments, thesis statements, or solutions to writing assignments
· Provide assistance with take-home exams
While we can suggest ways to approach and improve an assignment, we cannot, for the sake of academic integrity, tell you what to write about. Questions on texts and content should be discussed with your course professors.
Your needs, concerns, and questions help us develop more effective writing strategies and learning materials. Remember: we are here to help you. We want to provide the best writing support we can, and your feedback matters! Feel free to talk openly with us.
