UIC Writing Center

30-minutes can fly by.
If you have a long-ish paper (more than 3-4 pages), we recommend reserving two consecutive 30-minute sessions.
This way you can meet with your tutor for a whole hour. 

Online tutoring sessions are held over Zoom.
Our ID is 967 7922 0512 and the passcode is Write (case-sensitive).
Sign into Zoom with your account and go to Join on the upper right corner.
When prompted, enter the ID number, click Launch, enter the passcode, click Join, and meet with your tutor!

The UIC Writing Center was established for the express purpose of assisting all UIC undergraduate students.
As such, we do not offer tutoring assistance to UIC graduate students or to non-UIC students. 

Go to “Appointments” >> “Make an Appointment” and log-in with your Yonsei Portal ID and password. Select the date and time you wish to make an appointment (available sessions are designated by a white box), agree to all policies, enter your personal information, select whether you would like an offline (in-person at the Writing Center in Songdo) or online (Zoom) session, and click “Submit.” An SMS confirmation message will be sent to your phone (for Korean numbers only). You are also welcome to drop-in, but priority will be given to students with appointments.

Yes! If you cannot make your appointment, you must cancel at least 12-hours before your scheduled appointment (so that other students can be assisted). Failing to cancel at least 12-hours prior to your appointment will be considered a “Missed” appointment, and three “missed” appointments will prohibit your use of the Writing Center for the entire semester. Go to “Appointments” >> “My Appointments” and click “Cancel.”

You may reserve up to a maximum of four sessions per week up to two weeks in advance and a total of twelve sessions over the course of thirty days.

You may check and manage your tutoring appointments on “Appointments” >> “My Appointments.” You will also receive SMS confirmation messages on your phone (Korean numbers only) for each appointment and cancelation.

A “canceled” appointment means that you have canceled your appointment at least 12-hours before your scheduled appointment on “My Appointments.” A “missed” appointment is when you do not cancel in advance and do not show up to your scheduled appointment. Your appointment will also be considered "missed" if you show up 10-minutes after the start of your session. Three “missed” appointments will prohibit your use of the Writing Center for the entire semester.

As long as you cancel 12-hours before your scheduled appointment, you are free to cancel as many appointments as necessary. However, we strongly advise you not to make multiple appointments and repeated cancelations. The Writing Center has limited hours available, and we ask that you please be respectful of our tutors’ and your fellow students’ time.

SMS notifications are sent automatically to the phone number you submit when making your appointment. We are, however, unable to send notifications to phone numbers outside of South Korea. If you have a (+82) 010 number but are not receiving notifications, please contact us at uicwritingcenter@yonsei.ac.kr. 

In a tutoring session, you get to work one-on-one with one of our tutors. Tutors will talk to you about the assignment you are working on and help you set priorities. They will answer your questions, offer suggestions, and help you make changes to improve your writing. You can come with assignment prompts, partial drafts, complete drafts, ideas, questions, or nothing at all. We have been through it all and are here to help you!

Absolutely not! You can come in at any stage of the writing process with any amount of work. Our tutors are trained to give you the best writing help, and that help will depend on what you bring in. You can bring no writing, a partial draft, or a full draft. With less writing, we can offer support for figuring out your ideas and how to tackle an assignment. With complete drafts, we can provide insight for the flow of your overall argument and the structure of your paper.

Unfortunately, the Writing Center is only open for the days and hours that are listed. Because our staff is small, we cannot offer any special accommodations for individual students’ requests. We do, however, offer extended hours during midterm and finals period. Please keep an eye out for our extended hours on “News.”

You are welcome to bring a friend to work together at a tutoring session. Preferably you should be in the same course and/or coming to work on the same assignment. Please send us an email beforehand at uicwritingcenter@yonsei.ac.kr with your name, student information, and scheduled appointment information.

Please keep numbers to 2-3 people maximum. There is only one tutor per day, and tutoring more than one person at a time will leave less time to address each individual’s work. We recommend reserving at least two sessions so that there is enough time for everyone to be assisted.

Unfortunately, we are not equipped to handle students’ writing and/or printing demands. If you are visiting the Writing Center for a final proofread before making your submission, we strongly recommend that you leave yourself enough time to print your assignment at the library or copy-center.

We cannot give out tutors’ personal information or contact information. If you have questions for a specific tutor, you can send us an email at uicwritingcenter@yonsei.ac.kr. It is always best to keep your questions and any writing assignment related thoughts within your tutoring appointments and the hours that the Writing Center is open.

Please remember that our tutors are also students like you! While our tutors are always happy to help, they are students with their own schoolwork and lives outside of tutoring.

All UIC students can become a tutor. We accept applications on a rolling basis, so check “News” for hiring notices (usually in the last month of the semester).
