Then apply to be a part of Yonsei-UIC’s LearnUs Online Course!
Yonsei LearnUs Online Courses provide free and open access to a variety of courses taught by distinguished faculty at Yonsei University. As a forerunner of global and interdisciplinary education in South Korea, UIC will be offering a LearnUs Virtual Korean Studies Course titled “Boom-Bang-Pow: Visual-Sonic Culture in South Korea” during the 2023 academic year.
One of the major players behind South Korea’s boundless cultural power and influence is the nation’s youth who simultaneously combat competition, disillusionment, precarity, and find courage and hope to carve out a unique and original space for themselves in the nation—and the world at large. The Virtual K-Studies Program “Boom-Bang-Pow: Youths and Visual-Sonic Culture in South Korea” is a 13-week online program designed for international university students who wish to learn more about the dynamic and innovative force that is South Korean popular youth culture. With lectures on visual and sonic culture—popular Korean films, drama, music, and art—and lessons in Korean language by esteemed scholars in Korean Studies, the program aims to develop students’ critical understanding of South Korea at the intersection of youth and culture.
We are looking for creative, innovative, enthusiastic, and responsible UIC students to participate as members of either (a) a production crew (working with directing, filming, and editing behind the scenes) or (b) a discussion panel (contributing to lectures on-screen) in the online course. Students applying for production should have good digital skills and experience with creating content (e.g., posters, presentations, images, shorts, etc.); students applying as panelists should be willing to engage with various K-studies related materials on camera. Students may also apply for both positions.
The timeframe for production (including planning, filming, and editing) is from July to August 2023. Students will be provided with a competitive per diem (commensurate with part-time jobs on-campus) for their work. Please note that students will be working on a need-basis. That is, work will not occur on a daily or regular basis; rather, students selected will comprise a LearnUs K-Studies Crew and be called upon on a need-basis and in consideration of everyone’s schedule. Selected students must, therefore, be attentive to emails and texts from UIC faculty.
APPLICATION
Students must submit an application form and sit through an interview with UIC faculty members. To apply, please fill out the application form attached and send the completed application form to uic_students@yonsei.ac.kr with the email titled as “UIC LearnUs Virtual K-Studies Application.” The application deadline is July 9, 2023. Selected students will be notified by July 10, 2023, and provided with the Zoom link for the interview at that time.
INTERVIEW
The interview will take place over Zoom on July 11, 2023 (time TBD but most likely after 2pm). Students applying for production must come to the interview ready to discuss and showcase any content (e.g. posters, presentations, videos, shorts, etc.) they have created; students applying as panelists should provide a rationale for applying.
