ESSAY CONTEST

“The Pandemic Age”

The UIC Writing Center invites all UIC students to submit a paper (in 1,000-2,000 words) about our current “Pandemic Age.” Papers may focus on (but are not limited to): Covid-19 and the Anthropocene; sustainable development in the Pandemic Age; politics and the pandemic; remote work and gender inequality; historical injustice and distributive justice; the pandemic’s impact on globalization; statelessness and vulnerability in the Pandemic Age; disease in literature or film; digital technology and the pandemic; online concerts and fandom in K-Pop; educational paradigm shifts; changing perceptions of time and space.

Students may submit an original essay or adapt/reinterpret one of their Yonsei-UIC course papers. Essays must be academic (non-fiction) and formal. They should have a clear topic, stake a claim, explain complexity, and cite and reference sources properly.

 

ELIGIBILITY

All currently enrolled UIC students who have attended at least one tutoring session at the

UIC Writing Center this semester. Students may submit only one paper.

 

SUBMISSION

The deadline for submission to the Essay Contest is Friday, November 27, 2020.

 

All entries must attach a cover page that is available to download from “News” or “Resources” at the Writing Center website (uic.yonsei.ac.kr/writingcenter). The essay itself should follow on a new page with no identifying information. Essays must be submitted as MS Word attachments to uicwritingcenter@gmail.com. All submissions will be blind-reviewed and judged by an evaluation committee of Yonsei faculty members. First-year students will be evaluated separately.

 

AWARDS

Up to ten winners will receive a prize and have their award-winning essays published by the UIC Writing Center.

 

Grand Prize (1 student) 500,000-won

Writing Prize (9 students) 250,000-won
